Instructions for Glass Painting

Glass PaintingGlass painting is one of the fast growing art and craft in all cultures and has got a wider scope. To write completely on glass painting is not possible. There are different ways to paint on a glass that ranges from traditional glass painting to specialized glass painting. It is very interesting to do. Different accessories are used in glass painting and special glass paintings kits are available in market. Types of traditional glass painting include:

  • Vinegar Trace Paint
  • Matt Paint
  • Silver Paint
  • Oil Based Paint

To do glass painting, one should follow the set of instructions given below:

  • Glass PaintingSelect a glass having smooth, clear and plain surface. Avoid using printed and rough surfaced glasses. Use gloves while dealing with the glass.
  • Clean the glass to make it free from all dirt and debris as glass paints can’t stick on dusty surface. Clean the glass surface with water and dry it with paper towel or clean cloth.
  • If you don’t have free painting skills then first of all you draw the image on the paper and then paste the sketch inside the glass.
  • Don’t smudge the already drawn outline with new one. Very often beginners make a mistake that they start new outline from the existing one and smudge the paint color on one point that looks very bad.
  • First make outlines and let the painting dry then adorn it with vibrant glass paints. Different types of glass paints are available in market as some colors are available in tubes with nozzles that allow the painter to apply the paint directly on the glass and some paints are available in tubes and used by using simple water paint brushes. Select the color according to the design.
  • Let the painting dry and then hang it on wall or frame it.
  • Use thinner to clean paint brushes

Follow the tips shared above and make marvelous glass painting.

When using glass paints or any other paints, make sure that they are mix thoroughly. Shake the bottles or roll them on the table. Stir them gently when neccessary.

Paints created specifically for using on glass can be applied to the clean glass. Create a slightly rough surface or tooth for acrlic paint to adhere to by first painting a layer of water-based varnish. Applying glass etching cream before using acrylics also works.

Creations made from free stained glass patterns will enhance your home or garden, and make great gifts for family and friends. Free stained glass patterns are also useful for making small projects such as suncatchers and candleholders, or larger project like panel lamps and full windows.

Painting on glass has become extremely popular in recent years. Every craft fair these days has a painted glass stall, and I remember a few years ago seeing some exquisite perfume bottles at a craft market painted in the most sumptuous colours and patterns.
